COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gahanna Lincoln boys bowling capped a historic season with a landmark performance at the OHSAA State Championships on Saturday at HP Lanes, producing the program’s first-ever individual state champion and advancing to the semifinal round of bracket play.

The Lions began the day in strong form during the three traditional games, positioning themselves among the top contenders in a 16-team state field. After Game 1, Gahanna Lincoln sat in second place, safely above the cut line for the eight-team bracket. The team maintained that momentum through Game 2, remaining in second, before slipping to sixth after Game 3. Even with the drop, the Lions stayed well inside the cut as competition shifted into Baker play.

Across five Baker games, Gahanna Lincoln battled through the volatility that often defines postseason Baker sets. The Lions ultimately finished eighth after the Baker block, securing the final qualifying position and earning a place in bracket play for the first time in three consecutive state-tournament appearances. That advancement alone marked an important breakthrough for the program, which had previously seen its seasons end in the qualifying rounds at state.

The defining moment of the day, however, came on the individual side. Senior standout Kael Clous delivered a 720 series on games of 232, 255 and 233, a performance that was confirmed as the top individual score in the boys field. With that series, Clous became the first state champion in the history of the Gahanna Lincoln boys and girls bowling programs, etching his name into the school’s record books and setting a new standard for future Lions bowlers.

Once match play began, Gahanna Lincoln leaned on its depth in Baker format. In the quarterfinals against Centerville, Andy Oswald played a pivotal role, stepping into the spotlight during the opening round of bracket play. Oswald came through with clutch shots in key frames that helped steady the Lions and keep them “above water,” as the team closed out a 3-1 Baker victory to move into the state semifinals.

The semifinal matchup against Cincinnati St. Xavier proved to be one of the day’s tightest series. Gahanna Lincoln traded games with St. Xavier in a back-and-forth battle that went the distance. Despite several timely strikes and sustained pressure from the Lions, St. Xavier escaped with a 3-2 win in the best-of-five Baker set, ending Gahanna Lincoln’s run one step short of the championship match.

Even with the narrow semifinal loss, the appearance in the state final four and Clous’ individual title capped a highly decorated season for the Lions. Gahanna Lincoln’s boys varsity concluded the year as OCC Division champions, COHSBC division and overall champions, and Division I district champions. The state-tournament performance, highlighted by the program’s first state champion and a deep bracket run, reinforced the Lions’ status as one of Ohio’s premier high school bowling programs.

Coach Yvonne
This team fought hard yesterday and put everything they had out there on the lanes. To say I'm proud would be an understatement. This team is the epitome of "One Pride, One Family". They work together, have fun together, and always remain humble. As a Coach it is an honor to be part of such a wonderful athletic program, but this team really makes it easy. I am a boy mom, and I'm a boy coach, these are like my kids and I gain new ones every year. I can't wait to see what life has in store for our seniors, in addition to what this team will accomplish next season. I also thank all of the families of these bowlers who are aways there to provide their support.

Coach Ernest
In all of my years of bowling, I have not had the pleasure of working with such a cohesive, smart and talented group of young men. It's been my honor to be a part of this amazing season with them. Our loss in the semi-finals of states was heart wrenching... Click here to read full article
